Are You Able to Crack This? The Overlooked Netherlands Creation Which Forged the Contemporary World

One can find numerous candidates to claim the title of “planet’s most significant innovation.” The circular axle. The printing press. The combustion motor.

As per a recent publication, however, that honor belongs to the mechanised timber mill conceived by Dutchman Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.

“Prior to mechanised sawing, constructing a simple merchant vessel necessitated approximately 10 sawyers laboring over three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-driven lumber mills, an identical amount of cut lumber could be produced within a week.”

Thanks to this rapid mechanical saw, which turned logs into planks using virtually no manual labor, the Dutch could construct vessels faster compared to anyone else, an advantage that unleashed one hundred years of Dutch maritime, economic and artistic supremacy across the continent and the world.

The Original True Manufacturing Machine

Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, contends the writer, represented “mankind’s first authentic industrial apparatus.” A windmill rotated a gear. One component transformed the circular motion into up-and-down motion to power the cutting blade. A separate mechanism transformed the spinning motion into a lateral movement feeding the log to the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the log ahead one precise increment each cycle.

“Every component seemed simple by itself. The Dutchman’s brilliance was to integrate these parts so the machine operated within a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing with each downward stroke and advancing on every return stroke. It was an astonishingly clever use of basic components.”

A fact that brings us up to the current challenge. I’d like for you to reimagine one of the fundamental ideas behind this historic invention.

Circular to Vertical

Design a mechanism which converts rotary motion into up-and-down action. Your available these components only: A spinning wheel. Two pegs. Two rods. A “guide”, that is a cylinder or sleeve into which a single the rods can slide snugly. (Assume it is possible to put things on a stand, so that the components do not collapse.)
